Chira Reviews: Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez

If I was Oprah and had a voice where people listened to what I said, I would say that this book is prescribed reading material for all those who love beauty and pursue it. It is a true story of an american single mom who goes out to Afghanistan and started a beauty school. The women's lives change as they allow themselves to embrace beauty in secrecy, as the Taliban have forbidden women to enhance what they were born with.

Women got involved, and then disappeared, hiding their new looks under their burkahs for fear of exposure.

This is a tale of inspiration. It is inspiring to see how international companies collaborated which allowed so many more women to participate in the secret beauty school.

On a personal note: Whilst living in the middle east I worked at a school for young women coming from disturbed homes. The school was poor but it taught theses women skills to help them in their life's journey.

Coming from Minnesota and loving Aveda beauty products I too dreamed of partnering with a beauty business to help these women experience top quality products. It is still a dream... one of many!

-Chira

P.S. This book is now a movie!

Why We Do What We Do

It's client stories like this that make all the work worth it:

HAIR. Like many things in life, we don’t appreciate its value until we lose it. Hair is more then just a nice accessory. It is a part of us. Without it, we feel like we’re missing an important part of ourselves. I have always wanted long hair, but when I was in my early 20s, that dream slowly faded until it had completely vanished, and in its place was a dream of having hair. Any hair. I would take it thin or thick, short, long, messy, wild, tame- anything would be better than nothing.

While in high school, as my black, straight hair was getting thinner and thinner, I was told that it was my fault. After all, I was pulling my hair back too tightly, and that was causing it to fall out. Friends and acquaintances would ask me often, ‘Did you just get a haircut?’ I would just nod my head and smile, even though I did not just get a haircut. Eventually, my hair got so thin, that it was basically gone. It got to the point where something needed to be done. The question was what could I do?

My close friends grew accustomed to how I looked without hair. Others would look at me strangely, and wonder what was wrong with me. They wouldn’t verbalize it, but the stares were always waiting for me at any social gathering. Acquaintances would ask me in casual conversation why I was losing my hair. While I’m sure they had good intentions, I did not want to discuss it with them. And worst of all, I didn’t know the answer! It was not a comfortable situation to be in. I would dream of different ways to get my hair back, but didn’t come up with any practical solutions. So, I kept dreaming.

One day, a kind looking woman walked into the classroom where I teach. She was the grandmother of one of my students, and unbeknownst to me, was also a sales lady for an online store selling wigs and hair pieces. She approached me very tactfully, apologizing for intruding into my privacy and asking if I minded discussing my hair (or lack thereof!) with her. Then, she offered all kinds of real, practical suggestions to put hair back on my head! She really wanted to help me feel and look good again, and it showed.

Six months later, her efforts paid off. I now wear a topper and couldn’t be happier. The closest thing to real hair, it beautifully fills in the gaping gap on my head. It looks so natural, that even wig-wearers are stumped as to what is the secret to my sudden hair growth. I no longer dread social settings, and I can walk down the street without receiving awkward glances from strangers. Friends and acquaintances are constantly commenting on how great I look. It’s a dream come true.

I would like to say a very heartfelt THANK YOU to Chira of saavywigs.com for all that she has done and is continually doing for me. She has made a tremendous difference in my life, and is always making sure that I feel comfortable and suggesting new ideas. Thank you so much, Chira.

If you are suffering from hair loss and can relate to my story, don’t wait until someone comes to your door, like I did. Call Chira or email her now. I am sure that she will be more than happy to help you too.

I never found a cure for my hair loss. But I did find a friend and a way to feel good about the way I look again.

Hair Wise: Wig Care/Styling Tips #2

Let's face it, when it comes to hair, Chira knows. She's had years of experience cutting, styling, coloring and teasing any type of hair that comes her way. During that time, she has accumulated some wise words about hair that she wants to share with you!
So when the topic is YOUR hair or wig, trust the expert.
These tips from Chira are designed to help in every day wig care as well as styling for those special occasions!

Tip #2:
Leave your wig to air dry in the summer shade, it gives it a lovely fresh fragrance!
For added volume: wash. Then when still damp, hang your wig upside down. This creates volume in the crown and after all, it is much cooler to wear a wet wig in the summer!
Here's another tip for staying cool and comfy: place a comfy grip (a silicone based band which is available on our website) in the freezer and then wear it under your wig.
This creates a barrier between your head and the wig.
Super cool  to wear and makes your wig seem weightless!
